Cartoons vs. executions

From February 1st, the press cartoons exhibition presented by Cartooning for Peace will kick-start the cultural programme of the World Congress Against the Death Penalty in Geneva.



With representatives from more than 20 countries, the exhibition organised by Cartooning for Peace will display the diversity of opinion and points of view surrounding the death penalty.
It will open on February 1st at Uni Mail University in Geneva before moving to the International Conference Centre during the Congress, between February 24-26. On February 4th at 5:30pm, cartoonists Plantu (Le Monde, France) and Chappatte (Le Temps, the International Herald Tribune, Die Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Switzerland) will inaugurate the exhibition and hold a debate with the students and the public.
The exhibition aims to “compare different experiences,” explains Myriam Keita, one of the organisers. “Alongside cartoons from abolitionist countries we will also have cartoons from States which have maintained capital punishment,” she continues. “We hope that this will enable the public to come to its own conclusions.”
“It is often said that media cartoons are a barometer of freedom of expression,” Chappatte says. “It will be invaluable to feel the pulse of the debate in different countries as regards the death penalty through cartoonists”. During the Congress, he will host a debate with Japan’s most famous political cartoonist, No-Rio, the Algerian cartoonist Ali Dilem, the New York Times cartoonist Jeff Danzinger, and Damien Glez from Burkina Faso.
